A Guide to Debt Consolidation Programs

Debt consolidation programs are for which people?

A large number of people struggle to deal with debt, and to make their payments on time. But why do people find themselves in such critical debt situations? One reason is because the average person pays around 25% of their expenses with credit cards. Paying with credit cards means paying back a credit issuer with interest as well as the amount that you choose to borrow.

Debt Consolidation programs allow the debtor to pay back different loans, just by taking one lump sum loan from a consolidation agency. This is more manageable, because the debtor now has to pay back one single loan to the consolidation agency, usually, that is at a lower interest rate. The consolidation agency pays back the various debts from the different creditors on the debtor’s behalf. The program of debt consolidation is aimed at creating a more manageable position of debt and dealing with that debt on behalf of the debtor.

However, it may be hard to determine exactly where to start from. The average person owns more than one credit card, and it becomes tricky to determine the total amount of debt owed. So the first thing to do is to tally up all your credit card balances. This is the total amount the debtor needs to pay.

The second decision to be made is to decide upon a debt consolidation program. There are many lenders who offer free credit card debt consolidation quotes. Do not just decide upon the first lender who agrees to lend money, instead, look around and compare. There are many consolidation agencies which offer services online, therefore the internet is a good place to start from. Use your favorite search engine, and try to locate companies who offer free consolidation quotes.

Once you have made your choice, and have found a lender which offers low interest rates, and minimum lending fees, make a check against the Better Business Bureau. This will instantly determine if the lender is reputable or not.

In today’s world, there are many consolidation companies, who are more concerned with getting their hands on your money, rather than helping you out of debt. These companies are responsible for consolidation scams. Watch out the types of companies outlined below:

  • Companies, which offer “zero interest loans”, and “perfect credit in a week”. These are simply ridiculous promises, which should immediately raise a red flag.
  • If lenders insist on the fact that they can get you a grant to help you out of the loan, then this is simply scam. There are grants for education, and starting businesses, but there is no such thing as a “grant to help you out of a loan”.
  • Many services ask for a huge fee to look into your case. Be on the lookout for such companies, as this is common practice. Legitimate services will never require you to pay an outrageous amount of money however you may be asked to pay monthly fees, or initial fees.

Compare and contrast the various lenders based upon what they have to offer. Find a consolidating service provider who offers good terms, low interest rates, and minimum lending fees. This way, hundreds, and thousands of dollars can be saved over the life of the loan.
